The scarcity of permanent freshwater surfaces in the Algarve means that a small pond like this can be an important focal point for birds.
IBA(Important Bird Area)
A paradise for birdwatchers, Ria Formosa is considered an IBA, ie an important area for birds, as well as part of the Natura 2000 Network. It is one of the most important areas for waterfowl in Portugal, housing more than 20,000 waterfowl regularly during the winter season. The whole area is very important as a gateway for migrations between northern Europe and Africa and is home to rare species in Portugal such as the Camão or Galinha-sultana, bird elected as a symbol of the Natural Park, and other emblematic species such as the colorful flamingos.
Birdwatching
o fully enjoy this observatory, we recommend that you come equipped with binoculars, a bird identification guide and some patience - of course you should keep silent and not put your hands or arms outside the observatory windows.
Species
Many species of migratory waterfowl from northern Europe spend the winter here or use the Ria as a stopover point on their way to more southern areas. Among the most relevant wintering species, anatidae such as Mallard Anas platyrhynchos, Anas penelope wigeon, Anas clypeata trumpeter duck, Anas crecca common teal and Aythya ferina stand out.
Migrations
Winter is the most favorable time for bird watching, as many species migrate from northern Europe in search of warmer climates; some winters in Ria Formosa, others head further south (North Africa) and use this area as a point of scale.
